SHANG CHI
Adventure/Action 2021 PG13 2h 12m
Release date: Sept 3, 2021
Director: Destin Daniel Cretton
Producer: Marvel Studios
Despite starting out as slightly interesting, Shang Chi quickly degenerates into incoherence. The lead role is played by an unknown actor Mr. Simu Liu who provides a lame performance and sleepy dialog that never really pulls you into the story. The plot is about a young man who runs away from a tough father that trained him to be an assassin. Scenes are mixed with slang jokes, terrible dialogue, unpleasant vocals, stick fights, martial arts, and excessive camera movement with unnecessary close ups to create excitement where there is none. The soundtrack is void of timely or memorable moments.
There is plenty here as fodder for the cattle from the uncreative and brainless corner of Marvel’s movie machine. If you want to walk out with a headache this is the movie for you. There are indeed some good performances, most notable by Tony Leung Chiu-Wai. He plays the hero’s bad father and does light up the screen whenever he is on it.
